Travel Information London Olympics 2012
This site will cary information about travelling to London Olympics 2012, both to London and then local transport to and from the venues.
The organisers are planning for most spectators to use public transport when attending events at major venues. This will be essential to manage the volume of visitors and to ensure safety.
Transport planning is centered around use of London's rail links (underground and overland) to take visitors to the Games. There will be good rail links to all London-based venues. For outer venues if the rail link is too far from the venue shuttle buses will take visitors to the venue.
Airports
London has four major internation airports; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Luton and London Stanstead, These will serve as hubs for international travel. Mainline railway systems and or the London Underground train system links each of the major airports to central London.
Rail
A number of rail operators will be providing special rail services to the three main stations (Stratford International, Stratford Regional and West Ham ) serving the Olympic Park. In addition there will be normal mainline services into cental London's mainline stations; Euston, Kings Cross, St Pancras, Liverpool Street, Victoria, Paddington and Marylebone.
For visitors travelling from France and Benelux the Eurostar rail link provides excellent and a fast way to reach central London. For the Olympics a special high speed "Javelin" shuttle will travel between Ebbsfleet International Station in Kent (Eurostar rail link to France, Belgium and Europe), Stratford (Olympic Park) and St Pancras International Station (central London). The journey to the Olympic Park will take 10 minutes from Ebbsfleet and 7 minutes from St Pancras. A train will leave each terminal station every six minutes during the duration of the Olympics.
London Underground
London's Underground Railway system, known locally as the Underground, is the easiest way for visitors to travel throughout central and greater London. The system is easy to use and safe for all.
Olympic Park
The Olympic Park just north of Stratford is served mainly by London's Overground rail network. In addition to the Olympic Javelin shuttle, some 9 additional separate railway lines serve or will serve the park by 2012. These local railway lines link up with London Underground and mainline railway stations which link London with the rest of the country. Additionally, the Central Line of the Underground runs to Statford, the travel hub for the Olympic Park.
Central London Locations
Earls Court, Hyde Park, Lord's Cricket Ground and Regent's Park are all served by London's Underground (metro) railway system.
Greater London Arenas
The ExCeL Exhibition Centre, Greenwich Park and Royal Artillery Barracks are all served by the Docklands Light Railway which links these eastern regions directly with the Olympic Park and with central London via the Underground.
The O2 Arena is on the Jubilee Line of the Underground which links it with central London and directly with the Olympic Village.
Wimbledon is connected to central London by both the District Line of the Underground and by overground rail networks.
Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena are on the Metropolitan and Jubilee Lines of the Underground and are also both served by main line railway services.
